WEBVTT

1
00:00:00.010 --> 00:00:06.000
Let's talk about how to manipulate the vertices, edges, and faces of our mesh while in edit mode.

2
00:00:06.000 --> 00:00:12.000
By default, we can already select a vertex with left click and move it around with the move tool.

3
00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:16.000
We can also select multiple vertices with shift left click.

4
00:00:16.000 --> 00:00:21.000
This allows us to rotate and scale our vertices with their respective tools as well.

5
00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:24.000
You'll notice that when you select a bunch of vertices,

6
00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:30.000
there are edges and faces that exist between these vertices that you selected that will also get highlighted.

7
00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:35.000
For example, if you select two vertices, the edge between them will be considered selected.

8
00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:41.000
And if you select all four corners of our cube, you'll see that the face within these vertices is also considered selected.

9
00:00:41.000 --> 00:00:46.000
You can technically manipulate faces and edges simply by selecting the vertices that form them,

10
00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:49.000
but you can also change your selection mode.

11
00:00:49.000 --> 00:00:55.000
In the top left hand corner of the viewport, you will see three icons that represent what selection mode you're in.

12
00:00:55.000 --> 00:01:01.000
By default, we're already in vertex select, but you can also change it to edge select or face select mode.

13
00:01:01.000 --> 00:01:04.000
These will allow you to select the edges or faces directly.

14
00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:13.000
For a more intuitive experience, you may enjoy holding shift and left clicking these icons to activate more than one selection mode at a time.

15
00:01:13.000 --> 00:01:23.000
For example, if we were to turn on every one of these modes at once, you could click anywhere on the mesh to select either a face, an edge, or a vertex at any time.

16
00:01:23.000 --> 00:01:29.000
Box select, circle select, shift select, and most basic selection tools are available in edit mode as well.

17
00:01:29.000 --> 00:01:36.000
For hotkey users, simply use the one, two, and three keys on your number row to change your mesh selection mode.

18
00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:41.000
You can also hold shift and then press one, two, or three to activate multiple selection modes.

19
00:01:41.000 --> 00:01:44.000
Another very important tool while in edit mode is loop selection.

20
00:01:44.000 --> 00:01:52.000
Depending on your mesh selection mode, you can select a loop of edges or faces by holding alt and left clicking.

21
00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:58.000
In vertex and edge select mode, you will select edges when alt clicking, and in face select mode, you will select faces.

22
00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:06.000
Quick tip, in vertex and edge select mode, the edge loop that gets selected is the one that runs along the edge you alt click.

23
00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:14.000
However, when in face select mode, the face loop that gets selected runs perpendicular to the edge you alt left click.
