Announcing: a giant training series focused on tiny characters -- including tips and tricks, workflow breakdowns, and lessons gleaned from Sprite Fright director Matthew Luhn and production designer Ricky Nierva.

Julien Kaspar is Sprite Fright's character artist (aka 3D Art Wizard), and a pro at explaining sculpting in wide-ranging videos. For example, this one.

Especially for connoisseurs of virtual clay, Julien has started a new series of walkthroughs on the creation of animal characters for Sprite Fright. It's an ongoing project with regular updates; part one is dedicated to... snails.

Why snails?

Because of all Sprite Fright's critters, snails get the most screen time. Which means they have to shine.

Julien shares an overview of his critter making lessons. [ View File ]

Julien covers oh-so-much. Which is unsurprising, given he's provided more than a feature film's worth of content (the Sculpting the Snail video alone runs to almost ninety minutes). Including: the dangers of T-posing, expression tests, face sets, masking advice, the secrets of shape keys, and shortcuts to get you playing your keyboard like a baby grand.

The lessons are presented in a loose, livestream style: lots of raw footage, plus Julien's thoughtful commentary. Watch Julien solve problems in real-time, with loads of practical insights into his process.

So: enjoy this banquet of l'escargot. Bon Appétit.

Coming soon: Julien provides walkthroughs on retopology, for edge flows of surgical precision.

Also coming soon to a production log near you: downloadable files of other Sprite Fright critter characters, each containing a work-in-progress to pore over.

More Julien in this Sprite Fright post, on Twitter, and presenting this Cloud series on nailing the basics of 3D characters.
