The renderfarm is busy outputting frames. Simon finishes shading of "One", the giant jellyfish and Andy revises lighting and compositing while Vivien helps out polishing the look of the film with amazing paintovers!
Surprise surprise! I'm still sending shots to the farm, compositing the ones that come back and addressing some lighting and continuity issues in shots that need to be send to final rendering! I'm also trying to plus some effects here and there to add a little bit more "oomph" to existing renders :)
The only thing left for me to do is the occasional paintover & cheering for the final stretch :)!!
This week I spent on getting One into shape for final rendering! That's almost wrapped up. Most things are done and there are only some special cases left, like when One is unconscious and the close-up version of the tendril used in a few shots. So with this a bunch more shots can render final.
The shading of the giant jellyfish has been mostly finalized, with all the main body parts ready for rendering (except for the close-up eye region and the hero tendril) As Simon pushes the final shading puzzle pieces into place, Andy tweaks the shot lighting and feeds the render farm.
I've been working more on the shading of One, which meant finalizing the tendrils and the dome, so that we can render some more shots. The region with the eyes still needs to be finished, but that will be it then for One!
My job currently is to feed the render farm with new shots. I'm going through a huge backlog of todo's to finalize the lighting on shots in 030_panic, 050_contact and 060_dance to upload as many shots as I possibly can each week. At this stage we have about 20 shots to be rendered, still. Most of the shots coming back from the farm need heavy compositing work, too!
This week was mostly paintovers! Trying to see how I can still out with the look of the movie while things get wrapped up.
This week, "One"s jellytastic tendrils are getting pushed further along through the shading pipeline. We prepare to start final rendering for sequences 050_contact and 060_dance.
This week was a mixed bag of success for me. Since there was a lot of updates to 'One's character shading, I struggled to keep revising old lighting setups for the shading changes. I also worked on pushing the poster design further along.
This was a week of mostly paintovers to help define the look of sequences that feature One.
Right now I'm all in on working on the shading and procedural modeling of One. That's the last big piece we need to finalize to be able to render the second half of the film. It's progressing well, but there are still a lot of last fixes and nudges to be made to squeeze out the level of visual quality that we're aiming for.
We are texturing "One", the giant jellyfish to prepare the second half of the film for final render! Meanwhile, the already rendered 4K HDR shots are processed through out comp and grading pipeline.
This week I helped out with mockups for the poster and started texture painting One. I also did a paintover for the ocean shot for the final sequence of the movie.
This week I helped out with mocking up the poster ideas in 3D. This was mainly to roughly flesh some of them out a bit, identify any potential problems and see if the 3D character can handle some of the poses.
I've processed most of the final renders that were done over the holiday break through our compositing setups. Along the way I'm doing lots of little tweaks for readability of the shots, adding subtle color tweaks and doing error fixes (mostly accidental flickering). I've also prepared two new shots for final rendering this week, among them is the 'island environment' at the end of the film. More to come!
