In this section, we will learn about saving our file and getting familiar with the Blender File Viewer. Some software uses an OS-based file viewer, but Blender has its own to save and view files.

Open a new Blender File and use Ctrl + S (or go to File >  Save) to save the file. A floating window opens called "Blender File Viewer". Let's go through the various interface regions:

  • Navigational buttons to go to the previous or next folder, up (out) of the current folder, or refresh the file list.
  • Adding a new folder/directory.
  • The file path.
  • Search window on the right of the file path.
  • Next to that are display options with a drop-down menu to switch to thumbnails, for instance.
Optional: Four tabs on the left are:
  • Bookmarks of folders you find important; this can change depending on the production. You can use the plus or minus button to add or remove bookmarks
  • System is the location that your OS currently has
  • Volumes are any disks connected to your computer or network
  • Recent are the locations you have opened or saved files recently

We can add a new folder if we (you) need to and give it a name. Below, we can enter the name of our file and save our file at a location of your choice. Call it "suzanne". Blender will automatically add ".blend" at the end, which is a Blender file type.

What is a .blend?

A .blend is a file extension that contains scenes, materials, animation data and much more. It is capable of storing external data by packing data like images (textures).

Note

If you change something in a Blender file, a small asterisk will appear at the top border. This indicates that there are unsaved changes. Once you have saved your file, you will see no more asterisk and also the name of the file and its path at the top border of the Blender window.

More about saving.

That was the end of the lesson. We have learned:

  • That Blender uses its own File Viewer.
  • What regions the Blender File Viewer have.
  • How to rename a file and save it at a specific location.
